Can we have a tool to cater for Surface designs that utilise patterns/tiles. The tools to make this work would greatly aid many print on demand and product designers. Part of this issue is related to the large production file that needs to be generated in order to print with acceptable detail on large surfaces.
Presently the only method available is by use of cloned image placeholders that are defined by the production base designer. This is limiting for the end user and potentially very exhaustive for the production base designer when there are more complicated patterns involved.
I see two possible options:
  1. A modified image place-holder - whereby the place-holder becomes the bounding box for the user uploaded image to be tiled within that space, options for tile by Grid or brick-by-row etc. and an attribute to increase and decrease spacing between the repeat vertically and horizontally. All the other placement features could remain functional for scale rotation and positioning. This image place-holder could then be used for functions such as creating a background behind other artwork or simply a pattern for the primary design. The availability of this feature could be enabled by the production base designer in the settings of the image place-holder.
  2. Cloning/tiling options for how the production base can be used within the preview setup - The production base designer would be able prepare a smaller base with the intention to tile it onto the medium to be printed. Then once in the preview setup, that production base bounding box can be cloned or tiled with an attribute to define the spacing into a repeating pattern for the purpose of demonstrating the finished product. This would yield a smaller production file for mediums with large work surfaces i.e. wall paper, textiles, signage and wrapping paper etc.
